As a kid, my mom and I butted heads… a lot! She said white, I said black! My mom wanted a daughter who was obedient, helpful and loving. I was independent, preferred to spend my days outdoors or at a friend’s house and sort of lazy. I was positive and optimistic, and I thought she was a pessimistic (but really, she was a realist, I was just too young and naïve to know any better). I walked to the beat of my own drum and she would punish me for it. I was literally grounded A L L T H E T I M E !!! Just ask my best friends… I even missed out on my own surprise party one time because I was grounded…so there’s that!

As an adult and a parent myself now, my mom is my best-friend, my confidant, my advisor and my biggest supporter. But to be honest, she was always my biggest supporter. It was her (and my dad’s) sacrifices, life-lessons, persistence, determination and unconditional love that allowed me to succeed and prosper both personally and professionally. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for them, and I know that all heartedly. Yes, we still butt heads and we often disagree, but my mom’s opinion and support is instrumental to my life.

While my mom’s support, before coming into adulthood, was so vital, it’s her current help that has been truly priceless. As a stay-at-home mom to three boys, my days are all consumed by my kids. From the moment I wake up to the moment I put them to sleep. When the weekdays role into weekends with no change in routine, its all about the kids. After a while (five and a half years to be exact), this wears on you. While we did hire some part-time, temporary help after we had our third son, we had decided that I would be the primary care-giver to our kids. That means, I needed to find some help. After all, it takes a village… Enter my mom, who will literarily drop everything she is doing to rush over and help me. In some critical times, she would often change her appointments around just so can be there to help. Whether I need her help with the kids, around the house, during the day or a few hours at night, she will always say YES! My mom is reliable and dependable. I can count on her and THAT is the best gift she’s ever given me. I honestly don’t know how I would have done this whole parenting / stay-at-home gig without her help.

I love this beautiful video from P&G all about the roles that moms play in their children’s lives. I dare you to watch it without tearing up. So grab a tissue and then share it with your mom. Most importantly, don’t forget to thank your mom this Mother’s Day!
