My best friend and I caught up over breakfast last month before the craziness of the holidays. She was excitedly telling me about her upcoming trip to Florida and some of the items she purchased to keep her two year old entertained during the flight. She mentioned how she got a LeapFrog product, but it wasn’t the exact one that she wanted. Based on her husband’s research, they really wanted the LeapFrog Epic tablet but it was sold out everywhere! As luck would have it, I had just received one for review so I told her that she could have it in exchange for her honest review. Here is her and her husband’s very detailed review, with both the pros and cons.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When choosing a tablet for my two-year-old daughter there were a number of important characteristics on my wishlist: small size and weight, age appropriate content, longevity, background customizations, approved learning applications and the ability to play local media content (ie. my music and home movies). After a considerable amount of research and evaluation of online reviews from other parents, I chose the LeapFrog Epic 7” tablet so I was extremely excited to receive one for review (important to note that this device is recommend for three-year-olds and older).
Opening the box and holding the tablet for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by its lightweight. The Epic’s 1.3 pounds is light enough for my two-year-old to hold comfortably and the silicon bumper that comes with the unit has enough cushion that a parent can feel confident leaving the tablet in the hands of a toddler. The included stylus pen although a nice feature, was not something my daughter could use, so will not be included in this review.
The Epic comes with a 7” screen with high definition graphics, which is very noticeable when you first turn on the unit. In the background the tablet runs on Android’s latest operating system, Lollipop (at the time of this review), which means you can access all the applications on the Google Play store you would expect for a traditional Android tablet; however, LeapFrog’s software engineers designed an interactive menu that pops up at the sign-in screen when you first turn on the tablet or wake it up from sleep mode. It is from here that toddlers can easily access a LeapFrog interactive kid-style menu for games and other learning applications (more on that shortly) or parents can enter a code to access Android applications and the advanced settings menu.
When you first turn on the Epic you are asked to create a password. This password provides access to the “Adult Menu” and it is here that parents can set time restrictions for the unit or specific games, turn on airplane mode, manage battery usage and adjust sound settings. As a concerned parent, I was very happy to reduce the default sound output and turn on airplane mode.
There is a lot that can be said about the LeapFrog applications. For this review, I will keep it short and say that I was very impressed. Twenty of LeapFrog’s proprietary apps come with the tablet and they range in age from two to eight. Most tablets are designed for three-years-olds and older, so I was happy to find age appropriate apps designed by experts in early childhood development that encouraged my two-year-old daughter to count and practice her colours, shapes and alphabet in an engaging and entertaining environment.
When my daughter was through playing with apps, we opened the pictures and videos application in the children’s menu and watched home movies I had previously copied onto a micro SD card. No additional setup was required. I just copied the videos onto the SD card, inserted it into the tablet (you may need a paperclip to get the card in all the way) and the movies were waiting for me in the movie application. Note: even though my movies were in a variety of formats, the Epic had no issues playing them.
Conclusion: We got the LeapFrog Epic for our first family vacation in the hopes it would entertain my daughter on the plane and allow her to watch videos she had grown accustomed to watching as part of her routine. The interactive menu and LeapFrog applications kept her busy for over an hour and the videos kept her busy for the rest of the flight. The battery lasted for over seven hours before we gave it a charge and it could have lasted longer (it didn’t hurt that it was in airplane mode). This is a device that if it can survive the hands of a toddler, can grow with my daughter for many years to come. There is good content for a two-year-old, very impressive content for older children, and enough processing power to keep this device relevant for years to come. It is important to note that the LeapFrog applications are not cheap; however, are well worth the investment.
