I’m not sure what la-la land I was living in pre-kids, but I had this unrealistic notion of what life with a child would be like. I just pictured my life as it was… PLUS baby. I imagined it would be awesome PLUS baby in tow. Totally fun and chilled PLUS baby in tow, etc.. etc… You get the picture.

I clearly remember telling my husband how I can’t wait to be off on mat-leave so I’ll have ‘TIME’ (hahahahahhahaha) to explore various areas and cute neighborhoods around Toronto. I had grand plans to meet up with friends, relax in local coffee shops or at the park, hold weekly picnic dates, and so on.

Of course, reality was not even a fraction of anything stated above. Now that I think about it… I didn’t REALLY think about life with a baby. I didn’t even know there would be sleepless nights. I guess that’s what you get for being one of the first in your group of friends to have kids. Sometimes ignorance is bliss… until it hits you in the face like a load of bricks.

Obviously parenting is not the worst! Yes, it’s hard and it’s all about putting someone else’s needs before yours, but it’s absolutely amazing too. It’s just not what I imagined (is it for anyone I wonder?). Parenting is a series of ups and downs, wins and losses, high points and lows, happy times and ugly cries… all wrapped up in a nice bow! If nothing else, and as my blog clearly shows, it is relatable. Not one mom has ever gone through an experience that no other mom has ever gone through. There’s just no such thing. No matter how little or insignificant that experience might be, another mom can relate to it.

That’s why I can’t stop laughing when I’m watching the new short series Newborn Moms by CBC Punchline. I love the Ferber ninja episode. I think we can all relate to the struggle of deciding whether or not to sleep train, and which method we should use or if we should just keep co-sleeping. Except at our home, when we were sleep training, I was the “strong” one who refused to let in to our son’s cries while my husband was the softy. The funniest is how when the baby IS finally asleep, we always worry about the WHAT IF worst case scenario. I had that exact same feeling recently when my one year old didn’t wake up at his usual time of 5:30 AM.

This series doesn’t pass judgment regardless of your parenting style or philosophy. There’s no preaching here. Instead, it shows us how perfectly funny our imperfections can be. Personally, when I look back at this time we lovingly refer to as “being in the trenches”, I’d rather laugh. This series captures those moments perfectly in a lighthearted way.
