Thanksgiving holds a special place in my heart. Funny enough, it’s a holiday that I started celebrating only 10 years ago. While it’s not a religious holiday, being Jewish and immigrating here in the late 80’s, it wasn’t something my family and I had done. It wasn’t until I met my husband that I started celebrating this beautiful holiday.

Thanksgiving is meaningful to me for many reasons. For one, I am obsessed with everything Fall. Fall weather, Fall style, and the look of nature during Fall. I always associate Thanksgiving with Fall because we always celebrate the holiday up North at the cottage. We spend the weekend hiking and exploring. Thanksgiving is also when my husband proposed to me back in 2007.

Thanksgiving dinner is also my husband’s favourite meal, making it one of my favourites too. While my family typically eats chicken in various ways, my parents and extended family don’t ever really eat turkey. It’s nice to have this special meal at least once a year. Lastly, and most importantly, Thanksgiving brings the whole family together. All of my husband’s family gathers for a weekend at the cottage and we catch up, play silly games and feast! Even when my oldest son was born, we didn’t miss a beat and drove up to the cottage for Thanksgiving weekend when he was only three weeks old.

Thanksgiving usually coincides with the Jewish New Year which when I tend to reflect on the past and think about the year ahead. It’s a time when I truly tune in to my thoughts and feelings and I consciously think about what I’m thankful for. This year, more than ever, with all of the crisis’ going on around the world, and some even in our own backyard, I’m thankful for my beautiful, supportive and loving family. I’m so lucky to be able to celebrate this holiday with my loved ones and I hope to do so for many years to come.

Whether or not you celebrate Thanksgiving, you will love this very touching and emotional video from Loblaws. The team at Loblaws surprised one of their customers with a Thanksgiving treat. Working with Loblaws chefs, they brought the family’s beloved recipes to life. It’s easy to see how food, holidays and traditions unite us all.
