What’s the one baby issue that is always used as an excuse for your baby’s less than favourable behaviour? Teething! Your child has rosy cheeks? Must be teething! Excess Drool? Teething! Low-grade fever but no other symptoms? Teething, teething, teething! With such a bad rap, it’s no wonder parents are constantly looking for ways to combat this never-ending phase.

Personally, I found that teething got progressively worse with each child. While all three of my boys had their first two teeth out by six months of age, they all differed in their teething experiences. We barely noticed that our oldest son Kyle was teething until his teeth magically appeared, one by one, until he eventually had all 20 of them. Our middle son, Ryan, definitely experience teething but it wasn’t constant. There was a short period where we gave him some all-natural teething drops which provided temporary pain relief. We usually did this right before bed time, so at least he would have a decent sleep for the first half of the night. I stocked up on a few teething items, all promising relief, but all came short of their promise. There was the teething beads necklace, a teething ring that can be placed in the fridge with a round hook for little hands to grasp and a bamboo teething knot where the ends could be dipped in water and stored in the freezer. Ryan didn’t seem interested in any of these items, tossing them aside like a has-been toy.

I know I’m not alone in my tendency to purchase every item available for teething. Just a few months ago, I remember standing in the aisle at Shoppers Drug Mart with my friend who is a first time mom, trying to help her pick out a few of the many teething products. It felt like mission impossible, and we had no idea if any of them would actually work, and really, we could have used that money for something more important like coffee or a new shirt to replace the stained one we’d been walking around in all day.

My eight month-old son Nathan, on cue, had his two bottom teeth come out even before he turned six months. But it felt as if he was teething since birth. Also, unlike my older two, Nathan refused a pacifier, so he was often sucking on his finger to relieve his pain. The results were chapped and red fingers. Besides trying more of the same, I recently got a chance to try out the new Munch Mitt teething mitten. The Mitt is made with food grade silicone, is BPA and Phthalate free and slips on your baby’s hand like a glove, reinforced with Velcro. It also makes a crinkly sound which is great for little ones who are exploring and learning. The Munch Mitt is designed for babies three months to eight months, but can be used up to age 12 months.
