If you’re not already familiar with TOMS shoes, you may not know that TOMS has a One for One policy where for every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS will donate a pair to children in need. TOMS newest giving initiative is through their bag collection. For every bag you purchase, TOMS will help provide a safe birth for a mother and baby in need.

While I think all of TOMS One for One initiatives are great, I’m personally so fond of this one. As a mom to three kids, I know how fortunate I am to have given birth in Canada surrounded by the best facilities, health care professionals and hospitals. I can have my pick of Gynecologists, doulas or midwifes. With so much worry and stress surrounding labour, especially for first-time-moms, it’s nice to know that I have access to the best care possible. Unfortunately, most people do not. Through TOMS newest initiative, funds will be used to help provide safe births in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Haiti and India. This work will be done by a network of TOMS Giving Partners involved in maternal and child health programs, who will help provide training for skilled birth attendants, along with providing a safe birth kit that includes vital materials like soap, gloves, gauze, a cord clamp, surgical blade and a clean surface to help a woman safely give birth.

To help celebrate the launch of TOMS bag collection, a special event will be taking place on Thursday April 23 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Capezio, located at 70 Bloor St West in Toronto. This is a public event so tell everyone you know!*

Dr. Shira Shafir (Director of Social Innovation and Impact at TOMS) and Kayley Redgers (Kensington Midwives) will be at the event to discuss Maternal Health around the world, and the need for providing safe births in developing countries. The event will also feature a short educational presentation on Maternal Health, and showcase a range of TOMS new bag styles.
