Now playing in Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to separation anxiety, my son is king.\u00a0 I mostly attribute it to the fact that I&#8217;m such an amazing mother! (sarcasm is obvious when written right?).\u00a0\u00a0Actually, I attribute it to the fact that I&#8217;m a stay-at-home-mom.\u00a0\u00a0My son doesn&#8217;t know anything else.\u00a0 While we do go to a lot (emphasize A LOT) of programs, I&#8217;m always right there with him.\u00a0 To him, his world doesn&#8217;t exist without me.\u00a0 Granted, he&#8217;s not even three yet, so I know that this will all change soon.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also pretty sure that his separation anxiety is very typical.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s not typical, is the reverse.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0mother experiencing\u00a0separation anxiety from\u00a0her child.\u00a0 Yet,\u00a0some parents experience this, including\u00a0M.J. Kang, mother to Mia and playwright of Stay With Me.\u00a0\u00a0While M.J. confesses that her daughter used to be attached to her hip, it all changed once she turned five.\u00a0 M.J. longed for the closeness she once shared with her daughter, now an independent, confident pre-schooler.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0roles\u00a0have truly changed when it was M.J. who started to experience\u00a0separation anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>M.J. wrote a comedic script about her thoughts and feelings.\u00a0\u00a0Along with her daughter,\u00a0M.J. is\u00a0performing at FringeKids! A family friendly\u00a0show aimed at audiences aged four to 12.<a href=\"https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080729.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2409\" alt=\"P1080729\" src=\"https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080729-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080729-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080729-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080742.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2410\" alt=\"P1080742\" src=\"https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080742-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080742-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mayahoodblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/P1080742-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><!--more--> Here&#8217;s what M.J. had to say in her own words&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I wrote this play because as a mother I find it&#8217;s me that has the separation anxiety and I have been finding this process of writing the script, showing it to a few friends, rehearsing and re-writing incredibly helpful in my journey of letting go &#8211; to allow my daughter to become her own person. I find motherhood, warts and all, to be incredibly joyful and that is what I hope comes across in my play &#8211; the love, fun, joy, and honesty of motherhood.
