A few weeks ago a few of my girlfriends and I went on a Mom Camp trip to Grey County. The timing was perfect as things at home were super busy. While I knew our trip would be busy as well, it was nice to get my mind focused on something other than my day-to-day chores and routines.

""

Our first stop was at Blue Mountain Resort. Probably the only place at Grey County that I (and most people) are familiar with. Even though my last visit here was five years ago with the kids, I felt at home almost immediately. The village is super quaint and colourful, the streets are lined with small shops and restaurants and in the backdrop are the beautiful mountains. Most people think of Blue Mountain as a winter destination, but there are dozens of things you can do here in the summer. We were here for two nights and it wasn’t enough.

""

Here are some of the highlights:

Accommodations

Rivergrass townhomes

Whether you are heading to Blue Mountain with your friends or family, Rivergrass townhomes is a great option. You can choose either a two or three bedroom option for your stay (6 or 8 person capacity respectively). Each townhome comes with fully equipped kitchen facilities and open-concept living area. During my visit, I stayed in the 3-bedroom townhome. It had one queen in two of the bedrooms and the third bedroom had two twin beds. The living room sofa also converts into a double or queen bed. The bedroom on the third floor where I stayed had an ensuite and an amazing view to the golf course. You also have access to a pool and hot tub that is shared by all of the units at Rivergrass. The best part is that the townhomes are located right next to the main village. You can either call the shuttle bus for a pickup (and drop-off) that is a 2 minute ride or enjoy a leisurely 10 minute walk from the base to your accommodation. I really want to come back and stay here with my family for a few days – maybe even in the winter.

Food

There are seriously so many great food options at Blue. Our accommodation had a fully stocked kitchen, so we could have easily bought groceries and prepared our own meals. But lets be honest – when I’m on a vacation (especially a short one), I want to relax. So we ate out for all of our meals. Here’s where we went:

Tholos Greek Restaurant

Not to be missed and you definitely won’t be dissapointed. I recommend that you start with a Saganaki (flamming cheese dish) and some dips for sharing. I personally loved the Roka salad (made with Arugula, roasted red peppers, grilled portobello mushrooms, toasted walnuts ,and cheese) for my first course. It was light and flavourful. Since I live in Greektown and eat out almost weekly, I opted for a non-traditional main dish this time. The Peggy’s Spicy Pasta hit the spot and was so flavourful (and not too spicy at all). For dessert, we tried a variety of their offerings like a baklava cheesecake, traditional baklava and ekmek.

""

""

Oliver & Bonacini

Located at the Westin Trillium House, this is one of my favourite spots for breakfast. The menu includes lots of traditional breakfast options and healthy starts. I got the warm oatmeal (super filling and big dish) and their freshly squeezed mixed fruit juice to wash it down with (along with coffee of course).

""

Firehall Pizza

This is one of the more popular restaurants in the village and for good reason; it offers classic pizzas which are always a hit with young and old. Here’s what I ordered: for appetizers I got Arancini, which are risotto balls filled with cheese and topped with tomato sauce. I highly recommend it! I got a large Greek salad for my main course (nothing to write home about) and we shared a garden party pizza which was okay but not my favourite.

""

M.J. Byrnes Irish Pub

We were originally supposed to eat at Northwinds Brewhouse and Kitchen (which I heard is amazing, and based on how packed it always seems, must be true). However, it was the night of the Raptors playoff game #5, and all of the restaurants were taken over by private parties. The only place available was M.J.’s. The food was what you would expect for pub food but the atmosphere was fun and lively and the fish and chips were a hit (although we all agreed that the French Onion soup was too salty).

""

The Pottery

Located at the Blue Mountain Inn, this is a great place for both breakfast and lunch (what I ate here five years ago during my stay with the kids). However, I was really impressed with their breakfast options. I started with the AVOCADO AND SPINACH smoothie which was delicious. For my meal, I got the poached egg avocado toast which was really delicious (but you need to spread the avocado on the toast yourself – fyi). There’s really so many other great options too. This is another great option for breakfast that includes both savoury, sweet, and healthy options.

""

Snacks / other

For snack options, for when you are feeling pekish in between activities, you can grab stuff at Starbucks, Poutine, Beavertails or the Village Market.

Action-Packed Activities

Mountaintop Segway Tours

This was my first Segway experience. I had no idea what to expect or how to do it. Luckily, our guide was super amazing and eased me into it. The experience includes a 30 min. training session which was great because while there is a learning curve, it’s quick and once you feel comfortable on the Segway, the experience is so fun. In fact, I would rate this as my favourite activity at Blue Mountain. Our guide took us around the mountaintop, through forest trails, around the (winter) skating rink, and around the edge which offered amazing panoramic views of the city. I highly recommend this activity for a girlfriends getaway.

""

Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster

The last time I was on the Ridge Runner was almost 5 years ago when I was 9 months pregnant with Nathan. Kyle was not even 4 yet, so we went down the one kilometer downhill ride fairly slowly. This time, completely uninhibited, I flew down at full speed (42km per hour!). I wish we had more time because I could have easily gone on this ride 10 times more.

""

Other base camp activities include the aerial challenge on the Woodlot Low Ropes course, Wind Rider Triple Zips zip lines, Climbing Wall, Apex Bagjump (free fall onto an airbag anyone? or enjoy a more calming activity like Cascade Putting Course or paddling in Mill Pond’s waters.

Tip: If you’re staying overnight at Blue Mountain, I highly recommend that you purchase the Play-all-day wristband ($69 during the weekday and $74 on weekends), which gives you unlimited access to any Base Camp, Mid-Station and Summit attractions for the duration of your stay.

Relaxing Activities

iwa spa

While I’ve taken a few yoga classes and practiced a little at home, the gan•ban volcanic rock yoga session was a first to me. On the top floor of the spa, tucked away in a little, blue-lit room, is a volcanic stone covered floor. This was a first for me but absolutely amazing. I could have easily spent the entire class lying on the stone beds. BTW… some of the benefits of volcanic rock is to soothe muscles, accelerate metabolism, eliminate toxins from the body and allow for increased circulation while heating your inner core. I highly recommend this class, especially with your girlfriends! Get all the deets HERE.

""

Crock A Doodle

While we had plans to enjoy more of the active base-camp activities, the weather had other plans. But to be honest, heading indoors to paint pottery was very relaxing and therapeutic. I did this activity with my kids when we were here last, but doing it in with friends is a totally different experience. The best part is that now I have a beautiful outdoor candle lantern to remind me of this amazing experience.

""

After two nights in this wonderful place, we headed to another place in Grey County for our cider tour. We aptly named this part of our trip the ‘action packed / workout’ portion. It definitely did not let down. Stay tuned for a post on our second half of our trip at Grey County which involved drinking, a beer bus, and a home cooked meal by a local chef!

If you have ever been to Blue Mountain with your girlfriends, what are some of the things you would recommend?
