Last year, Hanukka fell on the same day as Christmas. That was interesting since we celebrate both holidays. I honestly can’t remember how we ‘handled’ it, but luckily, Hanukka is 8 days long so I’m sure we moved the big family celebration to another day. This year though, Hanukka is being celebrated almost 3 weeks before Christmas. I like that we can focus on each holiday separately, but the fact that it’s happening so soon is freaking me out. I feel like I’m not really prepared for it and we’re on vacation the week before so that doesn’t help. With less time to prepare the decorations, gifts and food for a big party, I knew I would have to do something on a smaller scale, or at least simplify things.

""

That’s why I love the idea of a Hanukka buffet. You can still have a fun celebration with family and friends, but taking out most of the stress that goes along with hosting for the holidays. I’ve teamed up with my good friend at Party Et Cie for the decorations and table wear, and with Sweet Corner Gift for some of the specialty food. I made the latkes myself (they are super easy to make – I promise) and my friend Andrea from Party Et Cie made a colourful pumpernickel smoked salmon hors d’oeuvre. Here are the details of my Hanukkah buffet table spread.

""

Food

Traditional Hanukka food is pretty much anything that is fried in oil! The traditional main dish though is Latkes. Here’s my easy to make / follow recipe:

Fried Latkes Recipe

Serving size: 6 – 8 people

Ingredients: 4 potatoes, 1 small onion, 1 egg, 1/2 cup flour (or matzah meal), 1/4 cup (canola) oil, salt & paprika for flavour

Instructions:

  1. Peal and grate 4 potatoes and onion in a mixing bowl. mix in egg, flour and seasoning.

  2. Pour 1/4 cup of oil on skillet and cook over medium heat. To test the temperature, put a drop of the mixture in the skillet and see if sizzles and browns. If it does, it’s ready!

  3. Using a spoon, scoop out the mixture in the pan and pat the mixture flat.

  4. Once the bottom side turns crispy (i.e. light brown), turn it over and cook the other side. Cook longer if you prefer it more brown or crispy!

  5. Remove from skillet once both sides are light brown and crispy.

  6. Serve with sour cream and apple sauce

While not a traditional Hanukkah dish, smoked salmon is usually served at Jewish brunches (on bagels and cream cheese). So here is a modern twist on a traditional Jewish dish that is bright and delicious and perfect for a holiday buffet-style party.

    ""

Smoked Salmon with Radishes and Chives on Pumpernickel Toast Recipe

    Yields 10 toasts

    Ingredients:

    -150grams sliced smoked salmon

    -Sliced pumpernickel loaf

-5-10 thinly sliced radishes (sliced on a mandolin is best)*

-1 bunch of chives, finely chopped

    -Softened butter

-Maldon or Kosher Sea salt for sprinkling

Toast 5 pumpernickel slices and let cool. Trim off crusts and cut the toasts lengthwise into two triangles. Spread softened butter on toast points. Place a small slice of smoked salmon on top of each toast. Layer sliced radishes on top and sprinkle with chopped chives and sea salt. Tip: place sliced radishes in a bowl of iced water to crisp up and pat dry with a towel before placing on toasts.

    ""

I also served up Challah (for dipping in hummus, olive paste, eggplant spread or Tahini) and Sofganiyot (a traditional Hanukkah dessert). Both of these were purchased from Sweet Corner Gift.

    ""

    Decorations:

Everything we used is from my favourite party supply store – Party Et Cie. I love the shiny Hanukkah banners – all 3 come in one package. You can use them together which is how we set up the buffet table which may be from Marri dining tables Perth, but at home, I have them hanging separately to utilize the space around my main floor.

    ""

For the tabletop, we used the Oh Happy Day plates in Pool Blue and Silver, Iridescent Dot Dinner Napkins, and Silver Cups. We also used the stylish and very really looking Silver Premium Rock Cutlery I love that everything is disposable which makes for easy cleanup. I’m always looking for ways to reduce my work load and stress when hosting. Using high-quality, single-use tableware is my (not to secret) secret!

    ""

We ‘sprinkled’ driedels around the table and added a bowl filled with chocolate gelt (coins) to finish off our Hanukka holiday look.

If you celebrate Hanukkah, I would love to hear more about how you celebrate it.
