While we don’t regularly have family movie nights, we sure do love them when we do. For one, it’s special because we gather as a family and two, the kids love getting screen time, especially when it’s encouraged by either John or I. During the winter months we have them more frequently because nothing is more fun than cuddling together on the pull-out couch with a blanket and munching on popcorn. Halfway through pretty much any movie (or sooner if I’m honest), the younger kids may decide to play with their toys. It doesn’t matter because we’re all together and everyone is enjoying themselves. This past winter the kids have taken a liking to creating forts which is also another fun way to watch movies. The kids are in their forts and John and I get to lay out on the couch. It’s a win-win for everyone!

In the summer, when we spend most of our days outdoor, movie nights are extra special because they’re so rare. However, after a long day of running around in the sun, I find that nothing calms my kids more than some quiet time indoors and sometimes that involves putting a movie on. Just this past weekend we did just that up at the cottage. After an eventful day of swimming in the lake, jumping on the water trampoline, kayaking and golfing, a movie was the perfect break we all needed. I downloaded The Boss Baby, made the kids dinner (followed by treats) and we headed to our deck to watch the movie together under the open sky! It was a perfect end to a busy, but fun-filled day.

The Boss Baby

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that The Boss Baby movie is loosely based (or at least the introductory scene) on one of our favourite kid books – The Boss Baby. We received a signed copy as a gift when Kyle was born – almost 7 years ago. I’ve always loved that book because it was true. When a baby arrives to your home, they are the boss – not you! Following the witty and hilarious reality of having a newborn, the movie plot changes to follow the (Boss) Baby and his brother Tim on a secret mission to rid of the one thing that is in direct competition with babies. The movie is so cute and funny and sends a great message about the importance of family, team work and the special bond between siblings.

It reminds me of my life with my own boys – watching them play, fight, plot and love one another. It also has a sweet soundtrack! The movie is a hit with the kids and John and I.
