Did you know that March 20th is International Day of Happiness? I really love this idea. I know a lot of people will argue that everyday should be a day of happiness and for some, it is. Unfortunately, there are many people for whom daily happiness is just not possible. This is why it’s nice to be reminded that happiness is truly important and for us to recognize and celebrate it on a specific day.
There’s an interesting TED talk about synthesized happiness. It describes how one’s brain can perceive any change or a situation, even a potentially negative one, in a happy manner and light. This is one of the brain’s best functions I believe. While most people typically resist change, if we can start seeing our life in a positive manner, we can be happy with the outcome. Sometimes it’s all about perspective. Wouldn’t that be a great way to live?
So… what makes you happy? It can be as simple as seeing flowers bloom for the first time of the season or reconnecting with an old friend. I asked my three year old son what makes him happy. His answers: eating ice cream with sprinkles, playing baseball and hockey and watching TV. For me, it’s spending quality time with my family. I know, it’s cliche, but that’s what truly makes me happy. Giving my kids my undivided attention while exploring our great city makes me feel happier and better about myself as a mom and an individual. This last week the weather cooperated and we actually got to enjoy several outings together.
I captured the memories on video and on camera with our beautiful new HP Slate 8 pro tablet. I want to get my son excited about international day of happiness so together we selected our favourite pictures of the week. We printed them out on our HP printer and together, we made a beautiful collage of what represents HAPPINESS to our family.
The collage is a beautiful reminder to enjoy the little things in life, not just the material things, but the people we spend our time with. While I love celebrating happiness as a family of 4, I’m looking forward to celebrating happiness as a family of 5! I think the fact that we’re expecting our third child makes me the happiest of all.
So… what makes you happy?

No, I haven’t ever heard of International Day of Happiness. I think it actually might be International Day of Sickness at my house this morning. UGH. But I strive for happiness for sure.
