Ryan and Nathan, my youngest two boys, are in Senior and Junior kindergarten respectively. While some of the parents of their peers worry about what they’re learning (reading / writing), I mostly want them to gain social skills and learn through play. However, I’ve noticed a big discrepancy between what Ryan and Nathan are learning and how far ahead Ryan is with his reading and writing. I guess that’s what happens when you have two teachers teach the curriculum in two VERY different ways. For a while, I didn’t really think about this too much.
A few months ago, after watching his brothers do their weekly homework, Nathan asked me if he could do homework as well. This was also around the same time I received a 4 week trial to Reading Eggs (click HERE to get a FREE 4-week trial). Reading Eggs is an online reading program that makes it fun for kids to learn how to read based on their age and a brief reading assessment.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Nathan using the program so enthusiastically. While at first I helped him, he quickly learned how to navigate on his own and was able to progress independently. It was great to see how much he learned through reading eggs. Specifically, letter recognition through word and letter matching games and phonics by associating the sound of each letter by choosing the correct image that starts with the module’s letter. He also learned how to spell by rearranging letters to spell out the word of the image shown. All of this was enhanced through repetition.
While his reading is still a work-in-progress, it’s nice to see how much he is learning from this program. I can also see that it provides him with additional support and confidence when he does focus on reading in his class. He loves telling us what letters each word starts with (even though he’s not always right). I’m just happy he’s having so much fun learning and that he believes it’s a game and not a chore. After all, at his age, I don’t want it to be anything but fun!
While it is Nathan that primarily uses the game, Ryan and Kyle also use it, especially when they want some additional screen time. While we really limit our kids screen time, I have no problem when its for educational purposes. The boys enjoy ‘Reading Eggs’ and I feel good knowing that they are learning. Now that is a win-win!
