Last year, Kyle did the most amazing thing. He ran 10km with me at the Global Energy Race by Dempster’s. Throughout the race, both spectators and other runners kept remarking how well he was doing and cheered him on. I have a feeling he was the youngest runner for the 10km run (he had just turned 8 at the time). I was so proud of him and his commitment to finish, even though he found the last 5km difficult. I also know that he was proud of himself. We still talk about this accomplishment and how special it was to do it at such a young age and that we got to experience it together.
While he’s a natural fast runner and he loves it, I have to admit that he wasn’t properly prepared for the race in terms of training. It also didn’t help that he ran the first 5 km at full speed leaving him with very little energy to run the second half (rookie mistake).
Since we both had such a great experience last year, we decided we would do the run again this year. This time, with proper training. We’ve spent time this summer running together at the cottage (even Kyle’s younger brothers joined in) and we can’t wait to run the race again in a few weeks. In fact, when you ask Kyle what his goal is for the year, he proudly says ‘completing a 10 km run.’
Running is such a big part of my life, and I’m so happy that my kids are taking to it too. After all, it’s a great family activity that’s good for the body and soul.
This year’s Global Energy Race by Dempster’s is on Sunday, September 22, 2019. There’s both a 3km run/walk, or for a more challenging run, 10km race. Not to mention, for every kilometre completed by participants, Dempster’s is donating 2 slices of bread to the North York Harvest Food Bank. There’s also plenty of activities on-site throughout the day to keep everyone entertained and fed. It’s the perfect way to end the Summer season.
Hope to see you there!!
