I’ve always had the travel bug. Growing up my family and I traveled every summer. Whether it was road trips across the States, camping at Algonquin park or visiting Israel. Shortly after graduating from University I embarked on a 4-month backpacking trip through Europe and since then I’ve gone on a handful of trips including some all-inclusive resorts and cruises. I love to travel and I wasn’t going to stop just because we had kids. Before Kyle turned two, he had already been on over 20 flights traveling to New York, Edmonton and as far away as Hawaii!
While traveling with kids is fun, it is definitely DIFFERENT. You may need to make plans around nap schedules and often have to head back to the hotel earlier than you might otherwise. You also need to pack differently; namely, you need to pack a variety of baby gear to help make traveling smoother and easier.
Here are some of my must-have baby gear for traveling with baby.
Baby Carrier
I honestly don’t know what I would have done without my BabyBjorn carrier. It’s so practical and great to use at home but is also extremely handy when traveling. Kyle was a very fussy baby so when we traveled with him, we always packed the BabyBjorn. The minute he wanted out of the stroller, we put him in the carrier and continued on. It’s especially useful if you’re planning any hikes.
I’m proud to say that I’ve used the same carrier for all three of my boys. My middle son Ryan liked it even as a two year old and on the odd occasion as a three and a half-year old he still asks me to carry him in it.
Three Wheel Stroller
Three wheel strollers are very practical for travel as they can sustain and be pushed around in a variety of terrains, including on the beach and through trails. Not to mention, they come with plenty of storage space, which is key all the time, but especially when you’re traveling and you have snacks, extra clothes, toys, etc… While not all three wheel strollers are created equally, you really can’t go wrong with any of them. We love ours so much we use it daily and for travel.
Umbrella Strollers
If you’re planning a city tour, you might be better off with an umbrella stroller. They are light weight and compact and some even recline to offer your baby a way to sleep on-the-go. My personal favourite is the Summer Infant 3Dflip which I’ve written about HERE.
Baby Monitors
Baby Monitors are the ticket to prolonging your nights. I remember when we went to an all inclusive resort over a year ago with a friend and her family, while the kids were sleeping in bed, we set up the monitors and met halfway to chat and enjoy some drinks by the pool. We also use the monitor at the cottage when the kids are napping. Instead of missing out on the great outdoors, we sit outside with the monitor on.
