Just as songs from your past have the ability to evoke vivid memories, so do certain TV shows and movies. For me, movies really have this effect. The first time I had my girlfriends sleep over, we rented Girls Just Want To Have Fun, and I will forever associate that movie with that party and my elementary school friends. My dad was a big fan of Police Academy, and we probably rented a new movie from the series every weekend for family night. I will forever associate that series with spending time with my parents. Some of my favourite TV shows growing up included The Crosby Show, Who’s the Boss Full House, Saved by the Bell and Dawson’s Creek.
It’s also amazing how clearly I remember the theme songs to all of my favourite old sitcoms. Just this past weekend, we had our siblings over and out of nowhere, without skipping a beat, we all started belting out the lyrics to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
My ultimate favourite movie from the 90s though has to be The Mighty Ducks. It’s the first time I had my crush (sorry hubby). Joshua Jackson anyone? It could potentially explain my obsession with Dawson’s Creek and my forever love for the Anaheim Ducks. I even got my parents to buy me a Mighty Ducks hockey jersey when they became an official NHL team in 1993. Since my boys are huge hockey fans, I knew my oldest would love this movie as well.
So if you’re feeling nostalgic, check out some of the oldies (but goodies) available on Netflix. Some great options include The Mighty Ducks, Ghostbusters, Honey, I shrunk the Kids, The Fact of Life, Diff’rent Strokes and The Smurfs and more.
While My Little Pony and The Care Bears are currently on tv, nothing beats the original, Both for animation and dialogue. I had to show my son the original versions of some of his favourite cartoon shows. I was happy to see that he enjoyed them just as much even though they were different than what he’s used to. Some other great oldie kid shows available on Netflix include Classics of Sesame Street, The Busy World of Richard Scarry, Curious George and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

The Golden Girls and Growing Pains along with the ones you mentioned were some of my favorites. Now we don’t own a TV so I don’t know what’s new out.
Maya Fitz says
Oh yes! Both of those for sure: ) you’re better off not owning a tv now. Not as good as the 90s sitcoms, that’s for sure (except some cool Netflix only shows)

Hi Maya! I had some of the same favorites as you! I was obsessed with Dawson’s Creek, and one of my best friends just gave me the COMPLETE SEASON BOXED SET. He found it on liquidation at HMV lol 🙂
