I wish there was a lot more early intervention provided within the school system. Sadly this probably will never be. Good luck going forward.

In my childhood honestly if you were having difficulties you were labeled problem child and had a horrific experience in school, no suggestion of LD at all.

My son had IEP’s throughout most of school, he too had a LD … I felt a ton of relief when I it was diagnosed, that enabled his school and teachers and I to be able to work together and find a way that worked for him and so forth.

It reminds people that there really should be no stigma around an LD. My son, too, has one and he is now in grade 10. I, like you, really advocated for him. I went above and beyond, got him a proper diagnosis through our own private testing and then pressured the board, school etc., to make sure he wasn’t forgotten and received all of the help and tools.

What no one told me was what he would be up against in high school and how the IEP became a real negative for him academically and even socially. Now that I’ve been through it, I’m able to give a full picture of advice to my friends that ask. It’s really important for everyone to know how this will affect your child through his/her whole academic career if your child will stay in public school (not private). Definitely ask your school board how the IEP works in high school. For example, some may not be “allowed” to get a full credit and the teacher will be forced to give an “accommodated” credit, which may not be a real credit. This is one of the hurdles we’ve had to battle. Once you have an IEP on record, there’s no taking it back.
