My husband and I always joke that my favourite books are ‘magazines’ (a line from The Simpsons). While I wish this was a joke, it is somewhat true. As a busy mom, I can never seem to find any time to read books. I remember books, I remember loving them, I remember them taking me to places I’ve never been to, and giving me all the feelings possible. Alas, those are all distant memories. I was even naive enough to bring a book with me on our last family trip. I’m laughing out loud right now just thinking about that. I must have been delusional, or most likely, sleep deprived… I digress!
Since I can’t find time to read books, I subscribe to a few magazines instead. I can usually find 5 or 10 minute chunks to sit down and read a quick article. Bite size reading as I refer to it. My favourite reads include Today’s Parent, Chatelaine and Toronto Life. My husband only reads sports magazines (surprise, surprise). In fact, my house is littered with recipes and exercises that I tore out of Chatelaine.
While I tend to be a little old school and read my favourite books (aka magazines) on paper format, I’m going to be making the move to digital. That’s because last week, I was introduced to Texture, which is the updated version of ‘Next Issue’. If you’re not familiar with this app, it’s basically a platform that houses more than 150 magazines. However, Texture was created to make the app more personalized, user friendly and streamlined. Think of it as the Netflix for magazines, but better. You can search for your favourite recipes and keep them in a “recipe” folder for easy access anytime, anywhere.
The more you use it, the more customized it will become, and the program will help you discover articles of interest. I’m just excited that I can finally indulge in my guilty pleasure of celebrity gossip. Yes, both People & Hello magazines are included in Texture.
At a price of $9.99 / month for Basic Unlimited for $14.99 / month for Premium Unlimited, you’ll be saving A LOT if you subscribe to two or three magazines like I do. Not to mention, you’ll receive access to so many great magazines. You’ll happily cozy up with your smpartphone or tablet every night as there will always be something new and interesting to read.
