Back in November, my kids all suffered from a dreaded cold. We had runny noses, sneezing and some coughing. I was really worried that the kids would be under the weather for our trip to Disney World, but luckily, they all got better right before we left, and whatever was left over pretty much vanished once we all received some of Florida’s natural vitamin C.
I thought we were lucky that we got sick early in the year and that it would be smooth sailing for the rest of winter. That thought is almost laughable. What was I thinking! Fast forward to January, and the family is sick again, including myself! This time, we all had a day or two of fevers. Honestly, the fun just never ends…
Unfortunately, I didn’t get a sick day, and so it was in my best interest to get better as quickly as possible. Armed with medicine, Kandoo Boogie Wipes and Scnoozle spray, we were all better within a week.
I also reached out to other fellow moms and got them to share with me their best tips for treating their kids during the winter. Here they some of my favourite mom hacks for cold and flu season:
Coughs and Congestion
Rub vapor rub (home made version that is safe for kids can be found HERE) on bottom of the soles of their feet and cover with socks – Renee
Put vapor rub on their shoulders too so they can breath it in while they sleep with their heads to the side – Sheri
Have your kids drink hot water, lemon and honey – Deborah
Get them to drink Hot Orange Juice – Ayelet
Feed them raw honey mixed with organic cinnamon (day and night) – Andrea
Runny Noses
Saline spray for the nose, especially if the bottom of their nose is extra sensitive. My personal favourite is Boogie Mist Gentle Saline Schnozzle spray. My son thinks it “tickles” him when I spray it and it instantly makes him feel better so he’ll ask me to use it on him frequently, without me having to mention anything – Me
Boogie wipes!! When my boys have a really runny nose I find they are the only thing that prevents their noses from getting raw and sore – Bethany
I always make sure I have 4 tissues in each of my jacket pockets – Lexy
Other tips:
Put on humidifiers in the kids room. Winter air is dry air. Humidifiers add moisture to the winter dry air which can cause irritations to many parts of the body including lips, throat, skin and nose. If you have a humidifier that isn’t working properly, then you may consider contacting a humidifier repair service – Ashley
Run an Air Purifier in the main area of the house – Tammy
Lots of sleep and eating healthy – Kathy
Remind your kids to wash their hands, and to do the elephant when they sneeze and cough – Jake (a dad)
