Not so long ago, before we had kids, the May long weekend (aka Victoria Day) was a special weekend for my husband and I. It was the unofficial start of summer for us as we opened up our cottage and invited (30 of) our closest friends up to party! Sure the weather might have been terrible and the mosquitos were out in full force, but we had a blast nonetheless.
Fast forward and now with three young kids, usually the last place we tend to be over the May long weekend is the cottage. For some reason, the kids don’t see the beauty of staying indoors underneath warm blankets, watching old movies and reading books for three days in a row. Weird, I know!
Since having kids, we’ve opted to stay in the city. However, just because we are home for the long weekend, it doesn’t mean we tackle our list of household chores. There are so many activities, events and outings we can enjoy right here in the city, that we have no regrets about not heading up to the cottage as early as we used to.
Readers Digest has put together an amazing list of the best hiking in Canada. While many of these trails are better suited to adults, Canada is also home to some amazing family friendly hiking spots. The Gold Creek Falls trail in Vancouver, B.C. or Webster Falls trail in Hamilton, Ont., are both great examples of outdoor trails that you can tackle with your kids. Be sure to pack a lot of snacks, bottles of water and sunscreen to keep everyone happy and energized throughout the day.
If you’re planning on taking a road trip but you’re worried about getting nauseas, throw some Gravol in your bag. I know that my brother-in-law and his wife often take them before they head up to the cottage. Gravol Ginger Liquid Gels are easy to swallow, non-drowsy and will help prevent any motion sickness on long car rides.
Also, if you’re planning on exploring, make sure you’re prepared post-hike. Pack some Rub A535 Extra Strength to ease those aches and pain.
