Joovy Caboose Too Ultralight Double Stroller – Review & Giveaway {Canada}

Our oldest son was two years and four months when our second child was born.  While we still needed some sort of carrying “device” for my oldest son, we didn’t want to get a double stroller.  He pretty much always insisted on walking or being carried or riding a scooter or… anything other than sitting in a stroller.  So we knew the money would be wasted on a double. Instead, we just bought a kick-board that attaches to the back of our stroller that my son can stand on. However, when we were expecting our third, the age gap between our second and third son was much closer.  They are only 19 months apart which meant, whether we liked it or not, we needed to get a double stroller.

Buying a double stroller is no easy task.  A lot of research needs to go into the process as there are many things to consider. Such as: tandem versus side by side, rear versus front facing (and can it be changed), how much storage room is there, are accessories included (i.e. where can I put my coffee since I’ll be drinking it 24/7), can the seats recline, is there sufficient leg room, and most importantly, what’s the cost benefit analysis (i.e. do I really need to spend a grand to buy a decent stroller). Just writing out all those options (and we’re just scratching the surface here) makes me feel like you need a PhD in strollers to actually make an informed purchase.

We received the opportunity to try out the Joovy Caboose Too Ultralight stroller.  While I had my hesitations about this stroller meeting our standards, I was pleasantly surprised with how well the stroller worked for us and our needs. My husband is also extremely impressed with this stroller.  Here’s a breakdown of some of my favourite features.

Versatility

This stroller is extremely versatile.  It works well with a newborn and a toddler, as you can easily pop in a car seat in the front and the toddler can sit in the back seat.  The stroller comes with a universal car seat adapter that is compatible with any car seat which is nice because you can reuse the car seat you may already have.  We used the Graco SnugRide Click Connect 35 car seat and it was great.  The car seat sits on top of the adapter but doesn’t actually connect to anything.  There is a strap, attached to the stroller, that you need to buckle around the car seat. At first, this didn’t appear to be sufficient enough to provide proper  hold. However, after taking the stroller back and forth to my son’s school on a daily basis and going over bumps and curves and ditches, I’m very confident that the strap provides great support.  When the newborn is older, you can take advantage of the two full-size reclining seats. As your child grows, the older one can ride on the rear bench seat and standing platform. The removable rear seat can accommodate a child from 6 months to 45 lbs. The seat reclines and includes a 5-point harness. The front seat accommodates a child from 3 months to 45 lbs. Total child weight is 90 lbs.

Joovy Caboose Too

Light Weight

The Joovy Caboose Too is lightweight (weighing under 24 pounds) for a double stroller and even compared to some single strollers, making it very maneuverable.  It folds and opens up easily and is very compact.

Tandem Stroller

At first I wasn’t keen about the tandem feature.  I always thought that I’d prefer a side-by-side stroller for my kids, especially since my middle child is very social and curious.  I thought he wouldn’t like sitting behind a front seat with abstracted view to the world around him and to his younger brother.  However, he was really excited to sit in the stroller and he never seemed to mind the fact that he had abstracted view.  Also, since we live in a walking neighborhood, I realized that a tandem stroller is preferable as we wouldn’t be able to go into most stores with a side-by-side stroller as it wouldn’t fit through the doors.

Joovy Caboose Too

Price

With a retail price of $319.99, this stroller is very affordable compared to other double strollers. You really won’t regret purchasing this stroller and it has great longevity use.

Other great features include easy assembly, a huge canopy, a parent organizer (2 cup holders and 2 pockets) that comes standard with the stroller and three-position recline front seat. The stroller also comes with a snack tray for the front seat but we haven’t been able to use it as of yet because we’re currently using the car seat adapter in the front seat. Also, a nice to have accessory is the rain cover.  Perfect for the unpredictable cold, wet and windy weather we have in Canada.

One possible area for improvement is the storage compartment which is tricky to get into with a child sitting in the back seat.  My son’s feet are in the storage compartment and he doesn’t like it if I put anything in there. Also, the only way to access the storage compartment are from where his feet are which makes it hard to get things in and out from there. However, I use the Mommy hook and hang my purse and purchases on there.  I also found that there’s some storage space right below the car seat and between the foot bar. Also, the side pockets on the storage basket is great for storing snacks.

We’re going on an all-inclusive trip next week and we’ll be taking our Joovy stroller with us. I know it will be a life saver as we maneuver around the airport with three kids and will be great to use to get around the resort and to have our newborn nap in while we lounge by the pool.  I would definitely recommend this stroller to anyone who has kids with either a small or larger age gap that still require the use of a stroller.
