Would you believe it if I told you that I didn’t celebrate Halloween until I was 10 years old? It’s crazy just thinking about it! But I’ll never forget my first Halloween trick or treating. It was a last minute decision thanks to some persuasion by a family friend, so I threw on a jean jacket full of buttons, parted my hair on the side, put on tons of makeup and went out as a peace-loving hippie! I went door to door and belted out the entire tune of “Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat…” It wasn’t until the 10th or 15th house that I realized that we could just knock and say “Trick or treat” instead of singing the entire song. Regardless, it was an amazing night and I had the candy to prove it.

Kyle’s first Halloween (1 month old)

When my husband and I first moved into our house, almost 10 years ago, I remember leaving work early just so I could get home for trick or treaters.  To my dismay and surprise, only a handful of kids showed up to our house that night and we live in a very family-friendly neighborhood. Seeing how upset I was, my husband suggested that we go for a walk to see why there was such a low turn out. We quickly realized that a street perpendicular to ours had a huge street “party” for Halloween.  I was still upset, but felt better prepared for future years.

Fast forward to life with three kids, and I’ll assure you that Halloween is taken very seriously around our house. It begins with a trip to the pumpkin patch to select a few pumpkins for our front porch and a trip to the local dollar store for decorations. We pick out our costumes months in advance and we host my family over for sushi dinner before we head out to the big street party.

Besides costumes, there are also some fun Halloween clothes I like to get my little goblins. I went to The Children’s Place this week and picked out a few Halloween outfits for my boys. They’re Halloween themed, but really, they can be worn all year-round. Two shirts and the pajamas cost me a total of $11! This is no trick… it’s a treat! They’re also great as layering pieces for Halloween night. But make sure you go TODAY because they’re already deeply discounted at 50% off and right now, you receive an additional 30% off thanks to the Big Blue Bag Event. The Halloween clothes won’t last long!
