It might be the end of July already, but earlier this month, people all over Canada celebrated this great country and everything that it has to offer. From the landscape, to the food (poutine, beaver tails, Tim Hortons coffee and tasty Canadian beer), to the generosity of the people, Canada has it all and we have so much to appreciate and be thankful for.
Although we’re not quite on par with Hollywood, Canada does have a celebrated film industry. Several movies, documentaries and kid shows were either filmed in Canada, took place or were created here. My husband who grew up in (North) Oshawa, always boasts about the fact that Happy Gilmore was filmed there. Living and working downtown, I always see movies being shot in around the city. Just last summer, a show’s finale was shot at a neighbour’s house. Canada’s diversity, whether it’s the landscape or its people, has so much to offer film makers. It makes me proud as a Canadian whenever I know a movie had some of its origins in Canada.
If you’re wondering which movies or shows are Canadian based, there’s a great selection on Netflix. You can find something for everyone in your family. Here’s some titles for the bigger kids:
- Are You Afraid of the Dark?
- Johnny Test
- Black Hole High
- Alpha and Omega
- Goosebumps
- Erky Perky
- Eliot Kid
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
Here’s some titles for the younger kids:
- Caillou
- Franny’s Feet
- The Busy World of Richard Scarry
- Super Why!
- Animal Mechanicals
- Monster Math Squad
- Team Umizoomi
- Thomas and the Magic Railroad
I would personally recommend Super Why!, a show about reading, writing and spelling and Team Umizoomi, a show all about math. Somehow, my four year old son is obsessed with both of these shows and I couldn’t be happier. Of course, he’s also slightly obsessed with Caillou, but hey, no one’s perfect!
Do you have a favourite Canadian show or movie? Do your kids?
