While we don’t regularly have family movie nights, we sure do love them when we do. For one, it’s special because we gather as a family and two, the kids love getting screen time, especially when it’s encouraged by either John or I. During the winter months we have them more frequently because nothing is more fun than cuddling together on the pull-out couch with a blanket and munching on popcorn. Halfway through pretty much any movie (or sooner if I’m honest), the younger kids may decide to play with their toys. It doesn’t matter because we’re all together and everyone is enjoying themselves. This past winter the kids have taken a liking to creating forts which is also another fun way to watch movies. The kids are in their forts and John and I get to lay out on the couch. It’s a win-win for everyone!
In the summer, when we spend most of our days outdoor, movie nights are extra special because they’re so rare. However, after a long day of running around in the sun, I find that nothing calms my kids more than some quiet time indoors and sometimes that involves putting a movie on. Just this past weekend we did just that up at the cottage. After an eventful day of swimming in the lake, jumping on the water trampoline, kayaking and golfing, a movie was the perfect break we all needed. I downloaded The Boss Baby, made the kids dinner (followed by treats) and we headed to our deck to watch the movie together under the open sky! It was a perfect end to a busy, but fun-filled day.
The Boss Baby
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that The Boss Baby movie is loosely based (or at least the introductory scene) on one of our favourite kid books – The Boss Baby. We received a signed copy as a gift when Kyle was born – almost 7 years ago. I’ve always loved that book because it was true. When a baby arrives to your home, they are the boss – not you! Following the witty and hilarious reality of having a newborn, the movie plot changes to follow the (Boss) Baby and his brother Tim on a secret mission to rid of the one thing that is in direct competition with babies. The movie is so cute and funny and sends a great message about the importance of family, team work and the special bond between siblings.
It reminds me of my life with my own boys – watching them play, fight, plot and love one another. It also has a sweet soundtrack! The movie is a hit with the kids and John and I.
The Boss Baby Blu-ray DVD is being released on July 25th. It features the voices of Alec Baldwin (Boss Baby), Toby McGuire (Adult Tim/narrator), Lisa Kudrow (Mom), Jimmy Kimmel (Dad). The Boss Baby Special Edition Blu-ray includes many bonus features including:
- New Mini Adventure, a 3-minute action-packed journey through time featuring Boss Baby and Tim
- Featurettes
- Deleted Scenes and
- More

We are like you in that we tend to have family movie nights more in the winter. When we are at the cottage we do like to watch a movie together… it really is the best ending to a busy day.

In summer we do not normally have movie nights, but in the other seasons we normally enjoy a family movie night once a month (We also have a family game night once a month). It is so fun making family memories.

Like you we tend to have more movie nights in the winter when the days are shorter and we spend more time indoors. The hardest part is always choosing the movie!

oh my gosh you guys are the cutest! and what a great atmosphere to watch a movie in. outdoors with nature. Makes it even better than watching indoors. With my girls it isn’t always easy to have a movie night. My youngest is 3 and can usually sit through most or all of a movie but my oldest is autistic and she always has to get up and do something, play somewhere else, then she will come back to it and watch whatever place we are at in the movie

We like to watch movies or have a game night. Sometimes we have a to have a vote on which games to play or movies to watch and sometimes we pick to prevent any unfairness.

Movie nights are always fun, unless you have to sit and watch Star Wars movies one after the other – my oldest, an adult, is a huge fan and though it was fun at first I got very tired by movie 3. We continued the next day!

We’ve never really had a family movie night. I will often watch a movie with the kids, but rarely is it a planned event with everyone watching. My twins aren’t quite 3 so they don’t very often sit through an entire movie.
Heidi Pawluk says
Movie night for us is at home usually – this way we can all just sit around, enjoy the movie, get to the biffy, pause & get something to eat, just works better for our family.
