In a house full of boys, hockey reigns supreme. My boys play hockey year round in our basement, on the ice in the winter and on the street in the summer. Even when we go away on vacation, we always pack mini hockey sticks and balls. Our boys love hockey and it’s a great way to keep them active and entertained. However, their hockey obsession isn’t only about playing. Before they turned two, both of my older boys knew every NHL team’s name just by seeing their logo. They’ve collected hockey cards for longer than I can remember and their most favourite holiday gifts are hockey stickers to fill in their hockey books. My five year old has a collection of hundreds of hockey cards and while he doesn’t know how to read yet, he can tell you the name of EVERY SINGLE PLAYER on his cards. So ya, they’re slightly obsessed.
My husband and I would love to take them to NHL games more frequently (i.e. more than once a year, if that), but tickets can be a little pricey. That’s why, for the past four years, we’ve gone to watch the Marlies play at least three or four times each season. Both of my younger two boys have tagged along when they were only a few weeks old. Marlies games, held at the Ricoh Collosium, are a lot of fun for the whole family. The arena is smaller in size than the ACC but the action is just as good. The American Hockey League (AHL) players are just competitive and play just as hard, as many of them are competing or trying to earn a spot in the NHL. Even my all-knowing boys, who understand the difference between NHL and AHL, get so excited to go to the games. Additionally, there are numerous exciting games on 원엑스벳 where you can place bets and have the chance to win prizes.
My family attended a game there this past weekend and here’s a few of the highlights you can expect at the game, along with some family-friendly tips:
On the weekend, 90 minutes before the game, Marlies Alley is open and includes various interactive games (i.e. fooseball, hockey shooting, etc…).
Check the schedule for which games will be held on Family Funday Sunday! During those games, the first 1000 kids in attendance will receive a Club Maple Leafs bag, hockey stick pen, and activity book.
If your children are obsessed with Zambonis as much as my son is, they will be happy to learn that they can get a chance to drive on one during intermission. Of course, you will need to set this up in advance.
At the end of the intermissions, make sure to head to the fan tunnel, located at the carpeted area, and high-five the players as they head back on the ice.
During intermissions, minor hockey teams come out to play. This is probably one of my son’s favourite times at the game as he gets to see kids play hockey, which he hopes to do himself one day with his hockey team!
The Marlies mascot is a cute and loveable dog called Duke. Watch out for him throughout the game doing various antics including hand-stands, jumping on the railings, and waving the Marlies flag. Try to catch him if you can for a fun photo opportunity with your kids.
At the end of the game, line up near the main entrance to Ricoh to meet with and obtain autographs from the players.
While it’s recommended that you purchase your tickets well in advance of the game to ensure you receive the seats of your choice, you can always find some last minute, game-day tickets (at a slightly higher price).
Most important, be loud! There are a lot of contests throughout the game including ones for the loudest cheer.
Have fun and Go-Marlies-Go!
