I know that for some Canadians, barbecue season is all year round. However, for us it’s almost exclusively during the summer months. That’s because we spend most of our summer weekends up at the cottage and there’s nothing simpler than making food on the barbecue. That includes breakfast, lunch and dinner because being at the cottage is all about relaxing and taking it easy.
There’s something to be said about the simplicity of grilling traditional barbecue food like hot dogs. It’s quick, easy and delicious. Most importantly, I know the kids will eat it. Since we barbecue so much during the summer months, I want to make sure we are consuming quality meat. That’s why I’m so happy that Maple Leaf Foods recently announced that their hot dogs, deli meats (along with their bacon, ham and breakfast sausages) are made with only real, simple or natural ingredients. It’s their new focus on putting families first, which is something that I can stand behind.
I recently got to meet with Michael McCain, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods, and he said that the change was due to consumer feedback and the way consumers have changed their food habits. And their promise? It’s simple… basically if your kids can’t pronounce it, you won’t find those ingredients in their food, they only use premium meat, NO artificial preservatives, NO artificial flavours, NO artificial colours, NO artificial sweeteners, and NO animal by-products. You can read more about this in their new Food Manifesto.
Want to know what’s in our favourite Maple Leaf Foods Chicken top dogs?
Here’s the list of ingridents on the back of the package:
chicken, water, tapioca starch, canola oil, sea salt, cultured celery extract, vinegar, cane sugar, cherry powder, dried garlic, spice, smoke.
Simple, right? That’s what I think too!
So this long weekend when we are hosting my family, and for the many weekends after, you can bet that we will be enjoying many hot dog meals with our family and friends… guilt free!
