How to Get the Most Out of Halloween With Your Little Ones & A Giveaway {Canada}

Last year was our first year trick-or-treating with our sons.  If it weren’t for my nieces and nephews who joined us, we probably wouldn’t have gone since our oldest son was only three at the time. That’s not to say we didn’t celebrate halloween in previous years though.  The first year we went out, my son was only a month old. We got him dressed up as a pumpkin and had our family come over to see him. We ventured out to join the other monsters and princesses without going door to door to collect candy (much to my husband’s dismay).

Year two we dressed our son up as a dragon and we showed him off to the neighbours.

So while we didn’t do the traditional door-to-door trick or treating until recently, we still had fun celebrating. So if you have little ones, here are some tips from me and Disney Baby on how to make the best of Halloween.
halloween 2013 family
1)  Be an early bird
If your baby is old enough and you want to go out and trick-or-treat or take in the ghoulish sights, don’t be afraid to head out early. This year, we’re getting together with two other families in our neighborhood who have kids the same ages as ours. We’ll take some (super cute) pictures, enjoy an early pizza dinner (4:30 PM) and head out trick-or-treating before my family, nieces and nephews join us for a late dinner and more trick-or-treating.
2)  Nix the neighbourhood
If you are not comfortable taking your little ones trick-or-treating, there are often local baby-friendly events you can bring them to instead. Last year, I took my boys, all dressed up, to the zoo. A few years before that, I took my son  dressed up to a pumpkin farm.

3)  Revel with your relatives

For a more low-key option, have a little party at home or take your baby to visit the family! Have everyone get dressed up in fun, friendly costumes, make a few treats like these frozen ‘boo’-nana pops, or set up a creepy craft station.

4) Stick with stories

If the idea of Halloween is still a bit overwhelming, and you want to introduce it to your little one slowly, start with a few Halloween-themed tales, like Pooh says Boo!or Halloween Surprise. Books like these are a simple and easy way to bring the festivities home, ensuring that baby enjoys a Halloween treat, and you enjoy a quiet night in.

5)  Choose a comfy costume

Whatever activity you choose, if you decide to include a costume, make sure baby is not only cute but also comfy. This cozy Mickey Mouse ensemble features soft fabrics, as well as snap button closures to make mom’s life easier!

Frozen costumes are going to be HUGE this year!

    Our first bundle of joy is set to arrive November 3rd and if he makes an early appearance, it just may be Halloween. My Husband and I have dressed up and decorated the house for years, I’m a witch and he’s a scary monster. We love handing out candy to the neighbourhood children. It’s so much fun to see all the little ones out! I love all your family photos, especially you dressed up pregnant as Mario! Too cute 🙂 Thanks for the great tips and giveaway!

    I’ll have an Ariel & an Elsa if it’s not too cold out (calling for snow) and if so we’ll have to figure something else out. My girls actually got to be Ariel & Elsa at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party on Tuesday night – after 30 degree temps we’re trying to get used to the cold Ontario weather. 🙂
