I’m pretty passionate about art. I’ve loved doing arts and crafts for as long as I can remember.I used to be a whiz at drawing portraits and I loved learning about art history. I took my love for art as far as OAC (I’m dating myself here – highschool used to have a 5th year called OAC). While my art career didn’t progress, I was excited to pass my love and passion to my older son. I found a lovely art class in our community by a passionate teacher and my son was hooked. His favourite activity at home is doing “arts and crafts”. He even has a whole cart of art supplies which he lovingly calls his “doodle drawers”. His doodle drawers are jam packed with paper, Craft Ribbon, stickers, scissors, beads, paint, dabbers and lots of Crayola markers and crayons. I find that we use everything so frequently that I often have to replenish our inventory every season. Of course, Crayola always comes out with new and funky products, who could resist.
Speaking of which… I recently got to try out the new Colour Alive colouring books that work together with the Color Alive App. I gave it to my boys as part of their Purim gift, and they were instantly hooked. Both of them got to work on colouring in the pages. My oldest son Kyle picked the Skylanders book and Ryan picked the Mythical Creatures (0ther Color Alive colouring books include Barbie & Enchanted Forest, which we gifted to our friends). It was great to see them both working hard at colouring in their books. Kyle, who is now in Junior Kindergarten, focused on staying in the lines while Ryan scribbled away, (wisely) making sure to use every single marker.
Once the boys were done colouring their pages, I showed them how the books worked with the App. Basically, their creation comes to life! I remember how we all watched in amazement and oohed and awed at their drawings turning 3D. They were so real, we called them our friends. Through the App, you can move the characters around, bring them to the foreground or make it smaller. The possibilities and fun are endless. I had just as much fun taking pictures of my boys with their creations as they did making them.
We also thought it would be fun to take pictures of our new friends during out various outings over March break. While I was the one that mostly played around with the App, I really think this is a great way that incorporates traditional art with digital media. I hope to see new creature-themed books in the near future so I can surprise my boys with some new colouring books.

Personally I’m fine with markers but for LOs – I “prefer” pencil crayons. Wax is hard to remove and markers can be hard to remove unless they’re Washables.

My 5-year-old daughter has transitioned from crayons to pencil crayons and now her favourite is markers (ugh). We only use Crayola products as the others are just a waste of money.
