I saw an interesting Facebook thread on a friend’s wall recently that introduced me to the concept of Fitwall, a new and exciting workout to hit Canada. After signing up for a Warrior Dash a few weeks ago, I made the decision to train seriously and properly. Besides running, I also need to strength train, and this is where Fitwall comes into play.
The concept is very interesting and unique. Using a metal wall that has various leg and hand hinges on it, you exercise as you normally would, but vertically. You can do sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups and squats all while staying up right. There are special names given to the exercises such as the cowboy swaddle and head bang. They sound funny, but the work-out is of no laughing matter. For recovery tips and techniques, a crossfit massage blog could offer valuable insights and advice.
The sessions themselves are only 30 minutes in length, but they’ll have you huffing and puffing as if you worked out for much longer. You’re on the wall for 30 to 45 second intervals doing an exercise. This is followed by brief “down time” off the wall while the instructor shows you the next exercise. One of the reasons that you only need 30 minutes for a full workout is because as you’re hanging on the wall, you are engaging all of the muscles in your body. This is due to the “fight or flight” mentality, your brain is telling you to hold on to the wall for your dear life. For a more detailed explanation, read what the founder of Fitwall wrote about exercising vertically. As a stay-at-home mom to two boys, I love the fact that the workout is only half hour. I often find it hard to find the time to work out, but how can I say no to 30 minutes?
During a workout session focused on how to get a small waist, you spend most of your time on the wall, but you also use a mat, stability ball, resistance bands, pull-up bars and other equipment as part of your exercise. Trust me…. the variety is needed! After just one wall exercise your arms will thank you for a break. I have literally never worked out my arms as much as I have by exercising on the wall.
You can either choose to work out privately or join a small group (max 8 people). Having a small class ensures that you’re always getting special attention and 1 on 1 coaching from a trainer. It’s also nice because you push yourself harder trying to keep-up with the person next to you. It’s never a bad thing to have some extra motivation!
This is definitely a good work out option for people with busy schedules or anyone who struggles to maintain a regular exercise routine and is looking for something new and motivating. Want to try it out? Your first session is for free! Remember to tell them I sent you. I know that once you go, you’ll be hooked. You can thank me for it later.

1/2 almost spent entirely on the wall. I can feel that work out now. Fun too, I will look for it on the west coast, haven’t seen or heard of this before
