I can’t believe it’s already been over 2 months since my “baby” turned two. Since he was born on September 1st, we usually celebrate his birthday over the labour day long-weekend up at the cottage. Only fitting since he was actually born on Labour Day!
The theme was Superheros. Nate might only be two, but he’s already well versed in the world of superheros. If you have multiple kids, I’m sure you’re familiar with the phenomenon of having younger children skip over certain stages, obsessions with characters, likes and dislikes to be more like an elder sibling. For example, Kyle went through a Barney and Thomas the Train obsession. By the time his younger brothers were at the age to enjoy those shows and toys, they preferred Pokemon, Hockey and Super Heroes instead. Whatever Kyle is into, they are too.
The Superheroes theme was a fun one to plan, especially at the cottage on a warm summer’s day. Here are some ideas for games similar to W88, decorations, food and loot-bags to help you plan your Superhero themed birthday party.
GAMES
Hulk Smash – I set up a pyramid of ice-cream cones on a short table. Put the Hulk mask and big Hulk hands on the child and let them smash the ice-cream cones. Have them see if they can do it with just one smash. This game was Nate’s favourite! Tip: This game is best played outdoors.
Thor Hammer Throw – Similar to Hulk Smash, you set up a pyramid of cups on a table. The table for this game can be high since the kids don’t need to be able to reach it. I made the hammer by attaching a tissue box to the cardboard at the center of a paper towel rowel. I then covered it all up with aluminum foil. This game was a big hit with Ryan, who is three years old.
Pin the star on Captain America’s Shield – I drew Captain America’s shield on bristol board and bought Foam Stars from a craft store. I put double sided tape on the star and blindfolded the kids. A twist on the classic “pin the tale on the donkey” game.
Nerf Target shooting – We set up a big target right between the cottage and the woods. The kids had three tries to shoot the Nerf Modulus IonFire blasters through the circle. While we had to help load up the blasters for some of the younger kids, this was Kyle’s (6 years old) favourite game.
